Make It Home for the Holidays ... By Driving
The U.S. government shutdown has disrupted air travel, resulting in a surge of holiday driving. Due to the government shutdown, car travel may be just the ticket to a happy Thanksgiving. The government shutdown has rattled air travel ensuing in an unprecedented effort from the Federal Aviation Administration to cut flights by 10% at airports nationwide.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said that even if the government reopened immediately, air travel will still be lessened because it takes time for enough air traffic controllers to be brought back in to work. “It’s only going to get worse … you're going to see air travel be reduced to a trickle,” Duffy said. Airlines also warn that flight cancellations will continue even after the government shutdown ends.
These disruptions are causing many Thanksgiving travelers to instead hit the road in their own vehicles or rental cars. For example, amid the FAA cutting flights, rental car companies are reporting record numbers of new business and a sharp increase in car rentals.
More cars on the road this holiday season can lead to increased injuries due to more frequent accidents. Factors like traffic congestion, speeding, aggressive driving, texting while driving (any form of distracted driving), and tailgating all contribute to car accidents.
