The Real Deal on Uninsured Motorist Coverage
Kobren Law helps clients understand how coverage works and unpacks steps to take before, during, and after accidents to protect your rights. Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage is an optional type of auto insurance that protects you when you’re injured by a driver who has no insurance or insufficient coverage to pay for your damages. This coverage essentially steps into the shoes of the at-fault driver’s insurance company, compensating you for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages that would normally be covered by the other driver’s liability insurance.
Florida law requires insurance companies to offer UM coverage. However, insurance companies don’t like selling UM coverage because they are now insuring every other driver on the road. Insurance companies often disincentivize customers from purchasing UM coverage because it shifts the financial risk of accidents with uninsured drivers from the policyholder to the insurer.
Kobren Law cautions you to be extra careful as insurance companies will attempt to mislead or discourage customers from purchasing UM coverage even though UM coverage is crucial for accidents involving uninsured or underinsured drivers. More uninsured drivers on the road means there are gaps in coverage, which usually only benefits insurers and irresponsible drivers who escape consequences.
Instead, consider using an independent insurance agent, which does not increase the cost of insurance. Independent agents will explain the coverages and recommend what is best for each person and their circumstances. There are advantages to using an insurance agent for auto insurance instead of buying straight from the company’s website.
The reality is that many policies have too much Bodily Injury (BI) coverage and little to no UM coverage. Policies can often be reapportioned to lower BI coverage and add UM coverage for the same or less in premium costs.
Florida does not require drivers to purchase UM coverage as part of their auto insurance policy but it is the only way to protect yourself. UM coverage is generally very affordable and should be regarded as one of the most important coverages under your auto insurance policy.
